Exemplar Ideation Work from Famous and Emerging Artists

Above we have Alberto Giacometti. Even though his work is representational, it is very abstract in nature. His line work is really intense in the facial region which places a lot of emphasis on human expressions. How do his portraits make you feel? He is using line is a very interesting.

Then there is the work by Lee Bontecou. She is mostly known for her sculpture, but her drawings are equally as interesting. Inspired by nature, her drawings are a mixture of organic and mechanical forms almost bridging the gap between these two worlds. Obviously we are dealing with an eye, but in a much more intriguing way.

Jesus De La Rosa is a friend and professor from Texas A&M University, but his systematic drawings are worth mentioning for this ideation assignment. A lot of these drawings are just intuitive experiments with drawing materials, yet bare striking resemblances to things found in nature. they are delicate, yet aggressive and they really activate the page to the point where they look three-dimensional. He's thinking a lot about composition, space, line, value and how these things can come together in new and exciting ways.

Julie Mehretu explores line and space in her drawings and paintings. We could sit in front of her pieces four quite some time and see something new each time we look at it. They come out of this idea of construction and architecture, but pushed so far into the abstract that they bring about emotions and feelings that one might not necessarily get from looking at a building or a blueprint.

Jeanette Barnes also works with architecture, but in a completely different way. She works from observation, using erasure to find forms. By adding and subtracting charcoal, it becomes a process of exploring rather than realism. Her drawings become chaotic and full of movement just threw mark-making.

I found these online and thought they were quite beautiful. What do you see in them? What makes these drawings so successful?
